Greenwich

I love touristing in my own city- Rai’s showing me around in Rio quickly turned me on to the many merits of being a tourist at home.

One of the many places I have yet to go in London is Greenwich. Although I failed to really understand the concept of the prime meridian (!!!) until getting there, I knew about it and wanted to have a look.

Before going to the prime meridian, I decided to take a ride on the Emirates Air Line. You can use your Oyster Card (what Londoners use to travel) to get on it, so its not too expensive.

The view was spectacular! It was very different from other skyline views of London, being so far East, but I really enjoyed looking out over the Thames, Stratford and Canary Wharf. It reminds me of why I love this city so much- just when you think you’ve seen everything, there’s more. And more. And more.

After feeling on top of the world for the price of an Oyster trip (such a good deal!), it was time to head over to Greenwich. I was a little stressed that I wouldn’t get to see everything what with the setting sun, but nonetheless took a bit of a detour through the Maritime Museum. If you’re ever in London, definitely go through it, even if only quickly. I forget how this tiny island made its name through sea power, but this museum is definitely a strong reminder of the relationship between Britain and the sea.

After walking through the museum, I made my way through the park, huffing and puffing up a really steep hill toward the prime meridian. The first thing I saw when I got there: a magnetic clock that was, ironically, not working properly.

Right next to it was the actual prime meridian line. I can now say I’ve been in two places at once: east and west. Kinda cool.

After that it was just a short walk back down the hill and back to the tube, but not before getting some final snaps of a fabulous London autumn sunset.
