So, since spring has sprung (everywhere else except here in snowy Denver, that is) I decided to add a little color to my wardrobe with a few new dresses. Unsure of where to start, being attracted only to dark colors, I made an appointment with a personal shopper at Nordstrom, my favorite shop on Earth.
Nordstrom is literally one of my few “happy places” in the world, as materialistic as that sounds. I have a feeling that this attachment initially formed because I used to go shopping there with my aunt, and although I could care less for the clothes, the cafe, where we’d go for lunch, was another matter! My love for the shop has grown with time- and grown BIG! So when it came to having to update my wardrobe for spring, this is where I turned. This is what I started with:
See?! Boring! I told my lovely personal shopper Britta the requirements for this excursion: colorful and non-traditional. Below are the finds she came up with- including some shoes. Forgive the tights and the fact that I’m taking my own pictures- did what I could with what I have!
First up was this polka dotted shirt dress. I felt like it wasn’t very flattering; it looked too much like a maternity dress, although I liked the pattern.
Next up was another silky shirt dress, colorful, casual and comfy.
I really liked this Milly dress, but is was super pricy and very traditional- not the goal of this trip!
I especially liked the wedges I tried with the dress!
This color was really flattering, as was the fit.
This DVF was one of my favorites- such a great color, and a nice A-line hem, which is very flattering for wider hips such as mine!
I loved this Marc Jacobs, it made me feel a bit like a snazzier version of Emily the Strange. Sadly, I own a few dresses that have a similar cut to this one, and HBL is always nagging me that I never wear dresses with a waist, so this one had to go.
This Rachel Roy dress made me feel as if I were about to go on a Hawaiian vacation, which is nice in the cool Denver weather!
This was definitely one of my favorites; Tahari always makes nice dresses. I like how the stripes change from vertical to a kind of sideways slant as they cross the hip and stomach area, as vertical stripes rarely do anyone any favors.
This was a very colorful dress, but not my style at all. A bit too much color for someone starting from beige and brown!
This Marc Jacobs was a great pick, too. Nice waistline, colorful and could go well with a blue blazer in cooler temperatures.
Which would you have picked?! With all the choices, I was hard pressed to make a decision. After much hemming and hawing (and help from Britta!), I went with the colorful red and blue Marc Jacobs and the blue silky shirt dress. Part of me wants to go back for the Tahari dress (stripes)…should I!?
I’ll post snaps of me out and about with my new gear once the weather improves!

I think being a fashionista is a. knowing what looks good on you and b. having the confidence to wear what you want! In Ugly Betty, Vanessa Williams' character wears all whites and creams in varying silhouettes and styles – and she is stunning AND a fashionista. Also – I am justifying my love of neutrals as well. I just don't feel as though loud colors and prints really represent my personality. (However, you're a different person!)
I think you should go back for the Tahari striped dress. I think it had one of the best fits of all the dresses above! It was my favorite before I knew that we were going to vote.
Thanks Miss Lena, I plan to!
Some very colorful clothes, they are looking great on you.
Sometimes it is not a bad idea to wear colorful clothes, particularly during summer/spring.
