Loss

After weeks of traveling, unpacking, catching up with friends and getting into the swing of things, I lost something really important to me that really stopped me in my tracks.

I tend to focus on all the positive stuff in my life on the blog because…well, what’s the point in dwelling on bad things?

The counter to that, though, is that this blog tends to show a very glossy picture of my life. I get comments about how everything looks so hunky dory and picture perfect all the time. But, of course, I’m just blogging about different bits and pieces of my life and my experiences- not everything that happens to me, every day. You’d be bored, scared and totally tuckered out after reading just half an entry if I did that!

That being said, I want to start taking steps to being more realistic. Life isn’t always glossy, I’m not constantly traveling or at good restaurants or having amazing, leisurely breakfasts at home. Life is messy. Sometimes I don’t know where its all going, what I’m doing or if it is all going to end up okay. And I just think that sometimes acknowledging that is more realistic and important than any trip I could take or meal I could have.

Do you think blogging should only be for the highlights, or should we save a post or two for lowlights, too?

One of my favorite bloggers just wrote along these similar lines. Blogs are becoming too stylised and salesy!

I think it's possible to be real on a blog without airing all your dirty laundry at the same time. I think the way you handled it on your next post – explaining that you went to Bath because you wanted to break yourself out of a funk – revealed some of who you are without admitting the reasons behind your mood. A simple "I just got dumped, so I'm craving chocolate and red wine, so here is a recipe for the cake I'm baking tonight," not "I just got dumped, and here is a list of all the reasons why he is a terrible person" keeps the focus on your public, content-oriented blog. This isn't a diary, so you don't have to share everything.
