Grain Store, London

Getting back into the swing of things here in London is harder than I thought. I tend to romanticize things, though, and underestimate things like re-acclimating, imaging myself as never having “un-acclimated” in the first place. When people in the US asked me how I liked life in London, what with the crowds of people, rain, chilly evenings and lack of customer service, my response is often, “Psh, everything there is perfect.” However, when I returned, I was forced to remember that they may have a point…

But I’m not complaining! London is my city. Every day when I step outside I feel energized and excited. Like most big cities, you never know what’s around the corner here, but, unlike all big cities, its not overwhelming or in your face. You can also take baby steps, just sticking to your high street if you find things to be a little too much.

One thing that I wanted to find out as soon as I got my bearings was where the nearest, newest watering hole is. I like places where you can gather comfortably with a group and hear each other above the din, without it being dingy or low quality. I like finding places that straddle the bar/pub line, in other words.

I was led quickly to the Grain Store in King’s Cross.

We just stopped in for drinks since we heard the savory cocktails were the stuff of legends (despite the bar being open only a year or so), but the food looked pretty good too, so I think we’ll be back. But enough of that, on to the good stuff…

Since I was catching up with good friends, I’ll chalk them up as the reason why it took me over 20 minutes to choose from the menu…but between me and you, I think its because I’m a victim of indecision, and thus, places like this are too much of a good thing. Everything looked intriguing, from the pumpkin and maple syrup bellini to the butter and hay champagne.

Luckily, I coerced HBL to try the truffle martini while I finally settled on the pumpkin and maple bellini. We switched halfway through because the truffle martini was just that good (although the pumpkin bellini, if you have a sweet tooth, was an awesome option).

A great find for a new local favorite- but keep the touts down so it can stay low key and good quality!

Good luck with everything. You're right it sure does take a while to get back into the swing of things. Finding a great place for drinks sure is important!

Oh I'm exactly the same – but then the little things always remind me of why I love the city so much (Paris in my case but nonetheless). Those drinks sound awesome I must try it out when I'm in London 🙂
